Frequently Asked Questions About Shiatsu

To follow are the top ten questions that new clients ask before coming in for a Shiatsu session. If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to share them with Dorene!

Q: What happens during a Shiatsu treatment?

A: Your Shiatsu treatment will start with a short discussion about your physical and emotional health, which will help Dorene determine what type of treatment will best suit your needs. The treatment itself involves a variety of massage techniques including the use of finger, thumb and palm pressure, the rotating and stretching of joints, and the working of tight muscles.

Q: Do I have to take my clothes off?

A: No: Shiatsu is performed with the client fully clothed. Loose, comfortable clothing is recommended.

Q: Are all Shiatsu treatments the same?

A: No. Every treatment will be different, and will address your body's particular needs at the time of your session.

Q: How is Shiatsu different from Swedish massage?

A: Swedish massage involves long strokes and kneading applied directly to the skin. The Shiatsu therapist uses his/her thumbs and palms (and occasionally elbows and knees) in order to apply direct pressure to the energy channels of the body. This type of pressure is used in order to release blockages on the organ level as well as the muscular level of the body. Shiatsu may include some massage techniques and stretches, but the client is fully clothed and no oils or creams are used.

Q: What are the benefits of receiving a Shiatsu treatment?

A: Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating treatment which helps to release the stress that settles within the body. It works to release tension and enhances the smooth flow of internal energy that nourishes your organs. Shiatsu also increases circulation, improves energy, and strengthens and calms the organ systems of the body - all of which helps to foster balance.

Q: What does Dorene bring to a Shiatsu treatment that may differ from other Shiatsu treatments I’ve received?

A: In addition to being a Shiatsu practitioner, Dorene is also an herbalist. Her knowledge of the internal body and about various health conditions helps her to tailor her Shiatsu treatments to the specific needs of her clients in a unique and in-depth way. Apart from offering an excellent Shiatsu treatment, Dorene can make suggestions about herbs, supplements, or dietary changes that may help rectify your particular health issues.

Q: Is it okay to talk during a massage?

A: Yes. Some clients like to talk throughout their massage session; others prefer to stay quiet or go to sleep. You should feel free to talk as much or as little as you’d like to during a massage.

Q: Does Shiatsu hurt?

A: Shiatsu can be either gentle or deep, depending on your needs and preferences. You should always let your practitioner know if you are feeling acute pain or discomfort during your treatment.

Q: Is it okay to offer feedback to my Shiatsu practitioner during a massage?

A: Absolutely. Though many practitioners are skilled at identifying physical cues that indicate discomfort, it can be difficult to do so with a new client. Additionally, environmental factors like room temperature and music volume may need some initial adjustment. If you find that you are uncomfortable with any aspect of your Shiatsu experience, let your practitioner know right away.

Q: How will I feel after receiving a Shiatsu Treatment?

A: Some clients feel relaxed or sleepy after receiving Shiatsu; others feel rejuvenated and energized. Most clients feel “loose” and able to move more freely. Clients that receive deep work may feel some muscular soreness the day after their treatment.
