Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete and effective healthcare system that has been practiced for over 5,000 years. It applies a deep understanding of the laws and patterns of nature to the human body. TCM differs from Western medicine in that it looks not only at symptoms and their underlying causes, but also views the body as a whole. Each presenting symptom is, therefore, treated in relation to all other existing symptoms. The TCM practitioner assesses the overall constitution of each patient, taking both physiological and psychological elements into consideration, and provides a treatment that restores harmony and brings the body back into balance.
TCM includes the following modalities:
Acupuncture is the best known of the TCM modalities, and involves the precise insertion of fine sterilized needles into specific points that have been mapped onto a meridian system along the body. By tapping into these acupoints, the body's qi (vital energy) can be either tonified or reduced to achieve balance.
Chinese Herbology can be used to enhance the effects of acupuncture or may be used independently. Herbs are a safe alternative or complement to allopathic medications, and are used to strengthen and support the body's organ system functions.
Chinese Nutrition Therapy is the TCM application of using food as medicine. The prescription of certain foods is based on their energetic function, not just their nutritional value. In this way, foods can be used in accordance with an individual’s diagnosis and specific needs to further their wellbeing.
Cupping is a modality in which cups made specifically for this purpose are placed on various parts of the body. A vacuum is created beneath the cups, which draws upon the skin to open pores, move qi, break up obstructions, and help to draw toxins out of the body.
Moxibustion involves the burning of the herb mugwort near an acupuncture point or along a meridian to stimulate the flow of the body's qi and blood flow.
